These very rare photographs have just been discovered in the Russian archives, having been lost for decades. They depict areas once under the guardianship of Russia and it’s southern provinces –areas that have since largely regained independence since the break up of the former Soviet Union. These southern and eastern eastern areas of Europe and Asia were often very remote , inherited by tribal type peoples where allegiance was to the Russian State, ( Czars and the communists ), or different islamic rulers.
Notice the hand made costumes that depict the ethnicity. And some of men wear medals.
These areas , now mostly unknown , were once mighty trade routes between Europe and Asia and China. With cities like Samarkand that boasted Palaces.
Notice also the interweaving Islamic and Russian Orthodox influences.
